Dental Sealants in South Jordan, UT
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They fill in the natural grooves and pits where cavities tend to start, making those areas much easier to keep clean. For children and teens, sealants are one of the highest-impact preventive treatments we offer. Adults with deep grooves or a history of cavities benefit too.
Why back teeth need extra protection
The chewing surfaces of molars have natural grooves and fissures that are often deeper and narrower than a toothbrush bristle. Plaque and food particles get trapped in these spots, and bacteria have a protected environment to produce the acids that cause decay. Most cavities in children and young adults start in these exact areas.
Sealants fill in those grooves with a smooth resin coating, making the surface easier to brush effectively and sealing out the bacteria and sugars that cause cavities.
The process
Applying a sealant is quick and completely painless. No drilling, no numbing. We clean the tooth, lightly etch the enamel surface for better adhesion, paint on the sealant, and harden it with a curing light. The whole process takes a few minutes per tooth.
Most kids have sealants placed on their permanent molars shortly after they come in, around ages 6 and 12. Sealants on deciduous (baby) molars are sometimes recommended as well for children at higher cavity risk.
How long sealants last
A well-placed sealant typically lasts 5 to 10 years. We check them at every recall visit and reapply or touch up as needed. If a sealant wears or chips in a localized area, it can usually be repaired without removing the whole thing.
Adults can benefit too
Not every adult needs sealants, but patients with particularly deep grooves, a cavity history on those specific surfaces, or certain risk factors often see real benefit. It's a simple, inexpensive way to prevent a future cavity in a tooth that's otherwise healthy.
Common questions
Does insurance cover sealants?
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children under a certain age (often 14 or 16). Adult coverage varies. We'll verify coverage before placing them so there are no surprises.
Can I still get a cavity on a tooth with a sealant?
It's much less likely, but yes, a cavity can form if a sealant breaks down or wears away without being replaced. That's why we check sealants at every recall visit. Home care still matters.
