Dental Exams & Oral Evaluations in South Jordan, UT
A comprehensive dental exam goes far beyond looking for cavities. It's a full assessment of your oral health, including teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues, and even your head and neck. It's how Dr. Osborne catches issues at their earliest and most treatable stage, long before they become painful or expensive. For new patients, the first exam is the most thorough visit you'll have with us. For returning patients, recall exams paired with cleanings keep everything on track.
What's included in a comprehensive exam
Dr. Osborne visually examines each tooth and checks it with specialized instruments for decay, cracks, wear, and failing restorations. He evaluates gum health with pocket depth measurements, looks for early signs of periodontal disease, and screens for oral cancer in your mouth, tongue, throat, and neck. Your bite is assessed for signs of grinding, clenching, or misalignment that could be damaging your teeth over time.
Digital X-rays give us a look below the surface at bone levels, root structures, and areas between teeth where decay often hides. For new patients we take a complete set of images; for returning patients, we take updated ones on a schedule based on your specific risk factors and insurance coverage.
What makes our exams different
The biggest difference is time. Dr. Osborne doesn't rush exams. He walks through what he's seeing, asks about anything you've noticed at home, and shows you photos or X-rays when relevant. If something needs treatment, he explains why and what the options are. If something looks good, he tells you that too.
We use intraoral cameras so you can see what we see. That changes the conversation from 'trust me, there's a problem here' to 'take a look at this.' Patients leave with a much clearer understanding of their oral health and what to focus on going forward.
Why exams matter more than most people think
Cavities, early gum disease, cracked teeth, and oral cancer are all conditions that are dramatically easier and less expensive to treat when caught early. A ten-minute exam finds them. Skipping exams for two or three years is how a filling becomes a root canal, or a cavity becomes an extraction.
Oral cancer screening alone is reason enough to keep up with exams. When caught early, oral cancer has an excellent prognosis. When caught late, it's one of the deadliest cancers. The screening takes two minutes and is painless.
What to expect at your first exam with us
Plan on about 75 to 90 minutes. You'll meet the team, finish any paperwork, have a full set of X-rays and intraoral photos taken, receive your comprehensive exam from Dr. Osborne, and usually get a cleaning on the same day if time allows. You'll leave with a written treatment plan if anything needs attention, along with a sense of what to prioritize first.
For returning patients, recall exams are more focused. Dr. Osborne reviews your recent X-rays, checks the teeth and restorations for any changes since your last visit, and updates your risk assessment. These visits are typically paired with your cleaning so everything happens in one appointment.
Exams as part of your overall health
A thorough dental exam is one of the few health screenings that catches conditions beyond the mouth. Oral cancer screening is part of every exam. We also watch for signs of acid reflux (which wears specific surfaces of teeth), diabetes (which shows up as gum inflammation that doesn't improve with normal care), and bruxism (tied to stress and sleep issues). Your mouth tells a story, and we read it carefully.
For patients managing chronic conditions, we coordinate with your primary care physician when appropriate. Good oral health improves outcomes for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy, and we're happy to share findings that might help with your overall care plan.
Common questions
How long does a dental exam take?
A new patient comprehensive exam is about 30 to 45 minutes on its own, which grows to 75 to 90 minutes when combined with X-rays, photos, and a cleaning. Recall exams paired with cleanings typically take about 60 minutes total.
Are digital X-rays safe?
Yes. Digital X-rays use about 80 to 90 percent less radiation than old film X-rays, and the radiation dose from a full series is roughly what you'd get from a cross-country flight. We only take X-rays when they'll give us information we can't get another way.
How often do I need X-rays?
It depends on your specific risk factors. Low-risk adults typically need a full set every 3 to 5 years and individual updates annually. High-risk patients or patients with ongoing concerns may need more frequent imaging. We always have a specific clinical reason when we recommend X-rays.
